What is cancer chemotherapy?
By chemotherapy (chemotherapy) or “chemistry”, patients mean all the antitumor drug effects, which include the use of cytostatics – which is actually chemotherapy, as well as hormonal agents, targeted and immuno-oncological drugs. Cytostatics and hormones are predominantly synthetic means, whereas targeted and immune ones are made from biological materials – protein molecules.
Today, with new growths in various combinations, all of the above are used, with some cancer one helps more, with the other – another, but the adverse reactions to cytostatics have brought “ill fame” to drug treatment. It should be noted that anticancer drugs of all groups cause significant complications, but cytostatics “became famous” for their heavy tolerability – as if this was the patient’s retribution for the effectiveness of the fight against cancer.
Terms and schemes of chemotherapy
For half a century of existence, drug oncology has developed hundreds of combinations – schemes. The dose of medicine for each injection is calculated by the area of the skin or the weight of a particular patient. For the introduction of recommended minimum toxic dosage, giving the highest possible effect, but the end result and side reactions are very individual and differ from course to course.
Clinical studies have shown that reducing the standard dose of a chemotherapy drug for any reason: incomplete elimination of previous course complications, poor immediate tolerance or exacerbation of other chronic processes during therapy – worsens the result of chemotherapy, and the less chemotherapy is administered, the less effect.
The time of treatment according to one scheme is called “course” or “cycle”, the break between courses is also defined and standard for all patients suffering from a certain malignant neoplasm. It is assumed that during the intercourse interval the body is fully restored and the tumor does not grow. As well as reducing the dosage, and the increase in the interval adversely affects the effectiveness of drug exposure.
The interval between courses and introductions must be strictly observed; for this purpose, symptomatic support and rehabilitation programs are developed after a course of chemotherapy.
